Overview
Thymalin is a naturally derived peptide complex extracted from calf thymus gland, consisting of a mixture of short peptides. It has been used in Russian clinical practice since the 1970s as an immunomodulator. It represents one of the earliest thymic peptide preparations developed for immune system research.
Mechanism of Action
Thymalin modulates T-cell differentiation and maturation, enhances natural killer cell activity, and balances Th1/Th2 immune responses. It promotes the maturation of immature T-cells in the thymus and peripheral lymphoid organs. The multi-peptide nature of the extract means it acts on multiple immune regulatory pathways simultaneously.
Research Context
Decades of Russian clinical use have documented immunomodulatory effects in immunodeficiency states, chronic infections, post-surgical recovery, and aging-related immune decline (immunosenescence). Khavinson's research group has also explored its anti-aging properties.
Key Research Areas
Considerations for Researchers
Natural extract composition may vary between batches. Synthetic alternatives with defined compositions exist. Store lyophilized at -20C. The complex mixture nature makes standardization challenging.
