Overview
PNC-27 is a synthetic anticancer research peptide derived from a segment of the p53 tumor suppressor protein fused with a membrane-penetrating sequence from HDM-2. It is designed to selectively target and destroy cells with abnormal HDM-2 membrane expression, which is characteristic of many cancer cell types but not normal cells.
Mechanism of Action
PNC-27 binds to HDM-2 (human double minute 2) protein when it is aberrantly expressed on cancer cell membranes. This binding induces membranolysis (membrane destruction) selectively in HDM-2-positive cells. Normal cells, which keep HDM-2 intracellular, are not affected by PNC-27, creating a selective cytotoxic mechanism.
