Overview
Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that broadly activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R. Its non-selective activation profile produces multiple effects including melanogenesis (skin pigmentation), sexual arousal, appetite suppression, and anti-inflammatory activity.
Mechanism of Action
MC1R activation stimulates melanocytes to produce eumelanin, darkening the skin. MC3R and MC4R activation in the CNS influences sexual arousal and appetite. The cyclic peptide structure improves metabolic stability over linear alpha-MSH. The broad receptor profile means multiple physiological systems are affected simultaneously.
Research Context
Originally developed at the University of Arizona for skin cancer prevention through enhanced tanning, MT-2's sexual arousal side effects led to the development of PT-141 as a more selective compound. Research continues into its melanogenic, anti-inflammatory, and body composition effects.
Key Research Areas
Considerations for Researchers
Non-selective receptor profile means multiple concurrent effects. Nausea and facial flushing are common research observations. Store lyophilized at -20C protected from light. Reconstituted solutions should also be light-protected.
