Overview
Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide that acts as the master upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Produced by neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate and anteroventral periventricular nuclei, it is the primary activator of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) neurons, making it the gatekeeper of reproductive function.
Mechanism of Action
Kisspeptin binds to GPR54 (KISS1R) on GnRH neurons, stimulating GnRH release. This cascade triggers LH and FSH secretion from the pituitary, which drives gonadal hormone production (testosterone and estrogen). Kisspeptin integrates metabolic, stress, and photoperiod signals to regulate reproductive function appropriately for environmental conditions.
