Overview
Dihexa (N-hexanoic-Tyr-Ile-(6)-aminohexanoic amide) is a synthetic peptide derivative of angiotensin IV that has been shown to be approximately 10 million times more potent than BDNF at promoting synaptogenesis in cell culture models. It was developed at Washington State University as a cognitive enhancement research tool.
Mechanism of Action
Dihexa activates hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) / c-Met signaling by inhibiting the enzyme that degrades HGF. The resulting increase in HGF/c-Met activity promotes dendritic spine formation, synaptogenesis, and neuronal connectivity. This mechanism is independent of and complementary to BDNF/TrkB signaling.
Research Context
Published research demonstrated that Dihexa restored cognitive function in animal models of dementia and enhanced memory formation in normal animals. The oral bioavailability of the tablet form is notable for a peptide-derived compound.
Key Research Areas
Considerations for Researchers
Very limited vendor base. Extremely potent -- used at much lower doses than typical peptides. The tablet form suggests oral bioavailability. Limited long-term safety data. Store appropriately per vendor instructions.
