Overview
Desmopressin (DDAVP) is a synthetic analog of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) with enhanced antidiuretic potency and negligible vasopressor activity. It is primarily studied for its effects on water reabsorption in the renal collecting duct, with applications in nocturnal polyuria and sleep quality research.
Mechanism of Action
Desmopressin selectively activates V2 vasopressin receptors in renal collecting duct cells, stimulating aquaporin-2 insertion into the apical membrane and dramatically increasing water reabsorption. The selective V2 agonism avoids the V1a-mediated vasoconstriction of native vasopressin.
