Selank

Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro stabilization sequence. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it has been approved in Russia as an anxiolytic and nootropic medication since 2009.

Mechanism of Action

Selank modulates GABAergic neurotransmission by influencing the expression of GABA-A receptor subunit genes, producing anxiolytic effects without the sedation or dependence associated with benzodiazepines. It also modulates serotonin metabolism, increases BDNF expression, and influences enkephalin and interleukin expression in the brain, creating a broad neuropsychiatric profile.

Research Context

Russian clinical studies have demonstrated anxiolytic efficacy comparable to benzodiazepines without sedative side effects or addiction potential. Research has also explored its effects on cognitive performance under stress, immune modulation, and adaptation to novel environments.
