Overview
Follistatin 344 is a naturally occurring glycoprotein that antagonizes members of the TGF-beta superfamily, most notably myostatin and activin. By inhibiting myostatin, the primary negative regulator of muscle growth, Follistatin 344 allows unchecked muscle hypertrophy in research models.
Mechanism of Action
Follistatin 344 binds to and neutralizes myostatin (GDF-8) and activin A, preventing them from activating their receptors (ActRIIB). This removes the braking mechanism on muscle growth, allowing increased protein synthesis and satellite cell proliferation. The 344-amino acid isoform is the longest and most potent naturally occurring form.

Myostatin knockout animals famously display dramatic muscle hypertrophy (the "Belgian Blue" cattle phenotype). Follistatin represents a pharmacological approach to achieving similar myostatin inhibition.
